A sample consisting of self-reports is statistically worthless. It is apparent that some of the interviewees want the courts to be simple machines for issuing the orders they want. preferably without them having to see the other party to the litigation at all.

As for cross-examination: after LASPO the senior judiciary should have said that the right of an adult non-corporate litigant to act in person and cross-examine the witnesses on the other side is part of the common law and can only be abrogated by statute; and if that means more alleged abusers cross-examining complainants in person, and being allowed the leeway that litigants in person have to be given, whatever distress that causes is to be blamed on Parliament.
