I never understood why firms chose city centres.

Parking non-existent, inflated prices for transport and the daily lunch, sat on a sweaty commuter train every day. Why?

As a non-partner, I avoid city firms. I've found the salaries are just as good away from the city, often better, but I get to drive to and from work in comfort, the prices for lunch are better and the choices more down to earth, coffee is far cheaper, and I don't have that "hustle and bustle" to contend with either. I get to know local shop owners more personally than in the city as they see me as a person they know, not just another face. It also supports outlying towns and villages that could wither away.

If I was a partner, I'd set up in a small town or decent sized village near the motorway, with staff parking for all. I'll wager if all factors are similar (salary, benefits, advancement etc) I'd get better staff than the city counterparts, certainly at the mid and high salary level.
