This aversion to generosity reminds me of an anecdote related to me by a solicitor at Bodmin Crown Court back in 1980, while we were waiting for our case to be called:

There was a dispute, in the next world, as to where the boundary between the Fire and the Garden should be located. The lawyers in the Fire prepared voluminous pleadings asserting that the boundary should actually be moved back 10 feet into the Garden. The statement of claim was tossed over the wall into the Garden. Almost immediately the response came back:
"We accept."
"What? Aren't you going to contest this?"
"No – we don't have any lawyers on this side of the wall."
