Compare the regulatory framework for the legal and accounting professions. There are 7 or is it 8 or 9 legal regulators, the most active of which is the SRA. A week doesn't go by when tried-and-tested safeguards and structures are being dismantled, supposedly to serve the consumer-client better. Meanwhile, accountants (including the Big 4) are implicated in train wrecks such as RBS, Quindell and Carillion but are governed by one regulator which is non-interventionist. Parliament needs to get the message to reform legal regulation and restore one regulator for solicitors. The profession needs to fund a public advertising campaign to abolish the existing regulatory set-up.
