"...The insurers will provide far less cover for only a slight drop in premium. And you are overlooking the fact that SRA Rules will require you to buy back the ‘lost’ cover at an increased cost and with less protection than you have now. .."

We have no protection at the moment.

But it is an interesting scenario that you paint.

Sole P / SME Firm to Insurer:

".......Dear Wayne,

I thank you for solicitude in your careful custody of my interest rather than you and your insurers, hidden commission, however we have decided to self insure the first £10000 of any claim against us and / or to tell the client that they take this risk.

I know that you have tried very carefully to ensure the retention of our business by offering us the much higher premium that we have had to take up to now and cannot offer us lower terms to renew, and I realise that it will be a disappointment to both your Insurer paymasters (and previously the employers of the Solicitors Profession generally), that for obvious reasons want a seamless legal service in their house (for the consumers interests of course, (not in anyway to tout and sell on dodgy CMC claims to take a percentage)), and we are sad that you will lose your commission, however, if you should like to find us a lower premium to match our proposals we would be quite prepared to pay you independently for this tailored service. Eve though we know that Frank Maher says this will not happen "

Mmmmm I can see the perverse logic you follow Frank.

Scruff.
