Just 2 examples in support of Ian’s comments. Visiting a prison to be told the client was “in education” so it was a completely wasted trip. On the follow up visit the client said he hadn’t been in education at all and had been quite miffed I hadn’t turned up. Then the occasion where I had told my client he was definitely going to custody for a road rage assault. When he came back for sentence a few weeks later and the inevitable happened he asked if I would visit his wife just to confirm the result. No problem I said. Called in to see her on way back to the office. She answered the door with babes in arms and I said something on the lines of ‘John’s asked me to let you know he got 4 months’. Sadly a he had no idea her husband was in trouble, let alone was facing prison and you can imagine her reaction. Not the best experience for either of us!
