'Better in my day'. I have heard this before. In order to establish a point of validation, calibration and contextual reference, when was the last similar survey of judges carried out?
I suspect there is scope here for mild delusion born of sedantry posteriors as their owners attentatively navigate the daily list from such lofty judicial heights. Let us consider how use of the English language has changed, how user friendly expression is used to articulate ideas, how latin phrases tend not to be uttered, how accents have changed, how racial and sexual prejudices are banished from the court room, how banter between the bench and the bar is far less cozy, how friendly luchtime noggings in the Bar Mess are no more. And consider also the cloned modus operandi of pupils of yesteryear who would everafter claim their method and success arose from those few months following their deal old pupil master around. Perhaps the reality of this survey deserves a little more thought?
