I've always understood that judges in the USA, at both federal and state level, are nominated and approved by the executive and legislature respectively. It seems to be no secret that these are often what might be called political appointments - so much so that the US Supreme Court regularly splits on a Republican/Democrat basis. Yet I've not heard any outrage against a system the Americans have lived with contentedly for 250 years. Can some expert explain precisely how the Polish proposals differ; such as to make them a menace to the rule of law and the internal peace of Europe? Surely the lowering of the retirement age is a matter well within the constitutional remit of the national legislature?

There must be some serious issues here that I haven't understood if our respected President finds it necessary to deliver an ultimatum to Poland to "halt" "immediately".
