I can certainly empathise with the, ‘long and cumbersome’ process. Many times I’ve looked at an advertised recruitment process and shake my head in wonder and almost always recall a senior legal personnel who once said in confidence to me, “I wouldn’t have stood a chance if I had to take these aptitude tests. I tried one of the samples and woefully failed”. Rather bizarrely he reckoned that his failure was proof that the process will bring in intelligent and super candidates. I could go on but I do wonder why our firms put in place these ridiculous processes, ask quirky interview questions. Is it really because there’s no other way to sort through the volume of applicants or is it because we want to underscore the idea that it is difficult to gain entry into this profession and in so doing (inadvertently or deliberately) fling the entry ladder away and expect applicants to grow wings and fly into a trainee contract or job?
