On the one occasion where I experienced what might be described as sexual harassment from a partner at my former firm, the incident when reported was handled extremely well. The report was taken seriously, and the outcome was that the partner involved gave a sincere and heartfelt apology without reservation, which helped to bring an end to the matter. I have never disclosed it to any professional colleague since, and nor have I felt the need to do so. For a single lapse the partner did not deserve the stigma and career destruction that would have followed had this come to common knowledge amongst local solicitors and the attention of the Regulator.
After the incident the working relationship was as strong as ever - always professional.
I do feel that society often overreacts to one-off incidents and underreacts to continuous behaviour patterns. By tarring everyone with the same brush, we do not do victims any favours.
