I've noticed more and more of the new intake of Deputy and full time DJ's appear to be barristers wheareas in the past they were predominantly solicitors.

With cuts in Legal Aid, and competition for fewer briefs I guess more barristers are considering a judicial career is appealling. Also, there is an element of institutional bias.

I got a press release last week from the MOJ about a scheme for judicial assistants in the Commercial Court in London as a way to get a foot in the door of this particular court. It was explicitly open only to barristers and application was by way requesting your "head of chambers" to contact somebody or other at the Commercial Bar Association.
