I don't think it's correct that only barristers have learnt on the job the skills needed to be a judge. Arguably many solicitors have had even broader preparation for this role during practice. On a daily basis many solicitors communicate effectively with a much broader range of clients and have to manage their time more carefully between competing priorities. Internal meetings in departments also require the ability to chair in a way that is both fair and productive. I agree with Jonathan that the current recruitment process does not test the right skills and/or identify potential in the way it should.
