I assume it went to the ECHR because German laws about privacy are much stricter than elsewhere - I think they don't allow the publication of the names of criminal defendants generally, so presumably these chaps felt they had a chance!
would have thought there were strong public interest arguments in favour of allowing the identity of convicted murderers to be made public, as a general thing.
