Can't comments just be turned off when this issue comes up?

Each side of the 'debate' has hammered their various points home ad nauseum and nobody has anything new to add. Moreover, nobody with any actual sway/influence on this issue will be reading them anyway. Not quite the definition of esoteric but not far short.
