"Please tell me if the government is so in the pockets of the insurers why they decided to change the discount rate and wipe billions of the value of insurers in the process, doesn't sound like a nice thing to do to a chum now does it?"

That decision was made by Liz Truss, someone who is not usually praised for her competence.

David Gauke referred to Ms Truss' decision during the debate. He was working in the Treasury office at the time and he confirmed the decision was made without involving or including the Treasury. It was an interesting insight.
