I am at a loss as to think of any reason that DUI is acceptable. I have heard of a few stories of drunk drivers colliding with people, then fleeing the scene to avoid a conviction while the victim needs urgent medical help.

It’s very, very easy not to drink and drive just as it is easy not to drive while making a phone call or sending a text or taking a selfie. Real people lose their lives to such idiocy. In my eyes, this kind of behaviour should be an instant.
