More Legal Aid cannot be the answer to the problems of Family Justice. In the 'glory days' pre LASPO when Legal Aid was available do we remember that lawyers managed to sort out the difficulties of child contact?! Since LASPO Legal Aid to men in Private Law has fallen from 40% of claimants to just 15% now (genuine MoJ stats!!) The bulk of Private Law Legal Aid goes to women who are seeking to exclude the father from the life of their children. That cannot be a proper use of public funds. What we need is a radical re-think where parents - and children - are empowered by knowing 'What normal looks like' leaving the Court to deal with those genuine cases where parents really do need to be excluded from the life of their children.
