This is why I gave up doing criminal work. I would often find myself giving exactly the advice that Mr Mardon gave in this case (i.e you have said no comment in your interview and you have denied that you committed the offence - the evidence is very strongly suggesting that you did in fact commit the offence. I have to advise you that you can plead not guilty if you wish but if you are found guilty after a trial then you will receive a much higher sentence than if you plead guilty).

This would frequently be interpreted by the more intellectually challenged criminal clients as "my brief didn't make up an alibi for me and was telling me to plead guilty".
