Reading between the lines the client was paying privately. The case had the potential to have a great impact on his life (work prospects) as no doubt he was aware and accordingly the case was of the utmost importance to him. The client came across as giving careful consideration before he entered his plea, which (again reading between the lines) was not entered at the first appearance. Ultimately how to plead was his decision (with appropriate advise from his representative). Nothing from what I have read suggests that he was not advised appropriately at each stage.
