I am in my mid-sixties and working full-time as a consultant doing residential and commercial property. I started in this business over 40 years ago. I gave up on partnership 15 or so years ago, preferring to do the work rather than run a business. I am lucky enough not to have to act for anyone I either don't know or who hasn't been recommended by someone I do know. They come to me because I go the extra mile for them. So do the people I work with and so do many (but increasingly not all) of the people I deal with on the other side. It pays the bills, but it hasn't and isn't going to make me rich. I am lucky enough to be fit and hopefully not yet senile, and I could probably go on doing a decent job for people for another 5 years or so. But, and it seems to have accelerated in the last year, the tsunami of new regulatory nonsense that has been foisted on a quiescent profession lately (who are probably mostly too busy to sit up and do anything to protest) is at last making me think it's time to call it a day. Add to that the way we are expected to take on all the admin for lenders anxious to prune their staff budgets to a minimum, and it is perhaps time I found something less stressful to fill my days with. The last straw quite frankly is "customers". Says it all, really.
