In response to Michael Brown's 14:26 comment, fair enough, I am "Anonymous 14:12", just for the record. I too remember scale fees so we must be about the same vintage. You will also remember the introduction of VAT: I remember feeling at the time that the battle was lost when the Law Society rolled over on that one, and yes, it has indeed been all downhill for the profession from then on. Why did I bother with all those silly exams when I could have done the same job nowadays without any bits of paper at all? Thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to post comments on this article - much there I would wholeheartedly agree with, especially Anonymous 14:08's reference to "...idiotic volume firm of conveyancers"!
