Great shame for the profession and the public there is such a terrible lack of confidence in the SRA, but let us not forget it was the Law Society who failed us in the profession and the public when it failed to provide a fair and effective regulatory system so they lost regulatory control because of a corrupt complaint handling process .

No one wants dishonest or incompetent solicitors in the profession and the quicker they are removed the better for all concerned, but it is so important everyone has confidence in a fair regulatory system that appears to have been lost .

A great shame they did not appoint a very experienced retired general partner to be chief executive who would readily understand the needs for fair and appropriate regulation while not being in the pocket of the Law Society or afraid to say when regulations are unfair or inapproiate.

Personally I use the ethics helpline of the SRA regularly to confirm my views and have found them always to be helpful and informative so regret deeply that some others in senior positions of the SRA appear to be constantly at odds with the profession.

My best advice is the President of the Law Society and the Chief Executive should meet and release an honest account of their suggestions to restore confidence or all concerned.

If they cannot then best they exercise some moral courage by stepping down and allow others to try.
