A comment below states " we need harder, not softer entry requirements.'

As far as I am aware, the SQE will be based on the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS). The QLTS is made up of two elements: (1) the Multiple-Choice Test (MCT); and (2) the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

As its name suggests, the QLTS can be taken by lawyers already qualified in other jurisdictions.

To help allay any fears that this might be a "softer" exam, the pass rate for the MCT taken in July 2018 was 50% (website of Kaplan QLTS). The pass rate for the LPC is, for one of the largest providers, in the region of 98%.

If the SQE ends up being based upon the QLTS, it would seem that there is little danger of the route to qualification being dumbed-down.

I have undertaken some work helping candidates prepare for the MCT. In my opinion, this is not an easy route to qualification, even for lawyers currently working in leading firms within the UK.
