I agree with James, although it's not right to say that solicitors will be practising "unregulated". They will still be subject to the Handbook as an individual. But the changes give desperately needed flexibility in the commercial market. At last, we'll be able to get rid of the fiction of so-called 'non-practising solicitors' who are the real problem. Some clients will prefer still to hire solicitors working for regulated law firms but for others, there will be a choice of solicitors still regulated but working for unregulated employers or freelancers. And it's not merely about costs. It's also about preserving relationships for those of us who are sick of the way law firms treat their people.

You don't have to be dinosaurs. You can embrace change and leverage it for your own advancement. Just like medics, most of you think you know best, you know what's in the client's interests. In certain situations you may be right but not in commercial services. But I believe that most fully informed clients are capable of taking decisions for themselves.
