Bertolt Brecht wrote a heartbreaking play called Fear and Misery of the Third Reich. It's a collection of scenes of life in pre-war Nazi Germany.

The play contains a scene set in a prison. There, a baker has languished for several years, having been found guilty of adulterating his flour with chaff. He is introduced to a new prisoner, also a baker, who has been sentenced for refusing to adulterate his flour with chaff.

I'm not sure why this came to mind reading this story, but it did.
