It's all very well saying 'oh but this was a sustained course of action' - the problem is that it can be very hard to get out of a sweatshop and even harder to find a new job. It isn't just a question of resigning and claiming constructive dismissal. People who run sweatshops deliberately create a climate of fear and doubt, fear about losing your job, fear about finding another, doubt about your own ability and competence. It's deeply unpleasant, it undermines your self-confidence, and takes a lot of energy to fight against - and if all your energy is being applied in trying to meet ridiculous targets, with the sort of emails that McMillan Williams circulated, it's a roundabout that you can't get off. Somehow we need to find a way out of this mess. I'm delighted that the Gazette has run this opinion article, as this is a very useful start.
