Mental health has been woefully disregarded in the profession for decades, as it has generally across the country. Anyone who has experienced mental health issues or studied psychology understands that in the UK we have decades of unresolved issued which are passed on from one generation to another with a "grow up and get on with it" approach. There was no mental health support after WWI, or WWII - I wonder why we have such a heavy drinking culture (i.e. "coping mechanism") in this country.... it's time for a genuinely holistic approach to the profession that considers competency beyond technical skill and knowledge to include mental heal issues and an obligation on firms not to put their staff in distressing situations.
