It seems unavoidable that a standard of honesty should require us as solicitors to be honest at all times and in all circumstances, so , in spite of the horrible circumstances, this seems to be right in relation to the instances of dishonesty.
However, it seems to me that the supervisors who allowed, or contributed to these horrible circumstances, should be held responsible for doing so. The legal profession regularly advises (lectures even) employers in all sectors as to their responsibility for the health and well being of their staff. The law sets out offences relating to health and safety and harassment. We are all too aware that lawyers at work are often less well looked after than the staff of the companies they advise. This is inexcusable, and the individual supervising lawyers cannot be considered "fit and proper", if they allow or contribute to the misery of their staff in the way that appears to have occurred here. Many clients would disregard employment law advice if they understood how some solicitors treat their staff with apparent impunity. Regulator, wherefore art thou?
