I graduated from a Russell Group university 47 years ago and in common with me most of my friends attended grammar schools. However the pitiful pay for what we used to call "articles" meant I had to return to my parent's home in the West Midlands town now a city in which I was brought up. To me the place was normal but early in my first term the criminal law lecturer set the scene for R v Pembleton which was outside The Turk's Head Wolverhampton at which half the lecture theatre broke into derisory braying laughter. Having been put in my place at an early stage l never presumed to venture out of my home ground but am now retired and am enjoying the fruits of 42 years' efforts and have no complaints.
