In response to Anon@14:08 - have you not heard of the SQE? Having legal professional bodies in charge of legal qualifications is certainly not a panacea!

I write as a lecturer at one of the "profiteer" providers - Ms Chakrabarti may be interested to learn that due to very small class sizes, the huge volume of the curriculum, the provision of practitioner texts to the students and the intensive nature of teaching skills such as advocacy and drafting, the BPTC is actually the least profitable of courses.

I don't see how the Inns, based in London and therefore faced with huge capital outlay if they wanted to teach it anywhere else would do it any cheaper.

In my (I accept not entirely objective view) the competition between law schools, coupled with students (since the advent of tuition fees) viewing themselves much more as consumers, in the main keeps fees down and standards up. Certainly far higher than when I did my degree and LPC.
