My first firm was a high street firm, which I joined pretty much from its inception. Some time later, when we opened our 1,000th file, the principal decided it would be a nice idea to mark the event with an office-based buffet of more than negligible poshness, washed down with a couple of bottles of Champagne.

As our small band mustered in the room that housed the secretarial pool and reception, two events coincided in time. One was a late middle aged couple walking in to make an initial enquiry. The second was the sound of a Champagne cork being popped to an accompaniment of laughter, merriment and applause.

The prospective clients were fed, watered and slightly bewildered. 'Do you do this every day?' the wife asked.
