Years ago I had to help make up pay packets and discovered that the firm had several low paid female employees earning the same salary.

I suspected a fraud but, on making discreet enquiries, established the true position.

Partners were invariably male with wives who did not go out to work. The wives were given virtual jobs at a salary equivalent to the tax-free band so that more money went into their families without paying tax.

Does the practice persist?
