What I find bizarre is that the UK government opposed this. Surely it is in our interest to have a safety net?

I know there are some ardent brexiteers who say No Deal will be fine, but the overall opinion seems to be that at minimum it will cause significant disruption to the economy. I'll admit I'm sceptical of some of the scare stories about medicines running out etc.., though equally I can't say that I am reassured that the UK government has meticulously assessed and planned for no deal either.

If on the 28th March next year there is still No Deal and some of the more outlandish worst case scenarios are starting to seem not so outlandish, wouldn't it be a good thing to be able to unilaterally call it off?
