It's a hyper-competitive market and the nature of the job is, in many cases, inherently stressful. I will make myself very unpopular by saying that for every trainee or junior lawyer that may burn out, there are at least a dozen others waiting for an opportunity to take their place.

Mental health is a serious issue and of course firms should act responsibly. However, there's only so much you can do to insulate workers from stress when the work they do is (sorry to repeat myself) inherently stressful.
