I am afraid I cannot get too excited by the fact that still over a quarter of trainees are paid less than the minimum recommended levels. That reflects badly on the profession and the regulator should be doing more about this and the general treatment of trainees (and indeed paralegals) across the UK, which in some cases is shocking. I am personally aware of trainees in South Wales being paid £16000 pa (gross) for 50 hour+ weeks; in addition they receive no proper training and are effectively used as cheap labour fee earners. Complaints have been made to the SRA about the firms in question but no action has been taken. Such treatment of young lawyers by firms is exploitative and totally unacceptable. I am also witnessing increased levels of mental health problems in young lawyers which the profession should be extremely concerned about.
