Ian it was irrational behaviour unless he felt a strong emotional drive to do it, which he could have done for any number of possible reasons.
Behaviour is primarily driven by people's emotions. Law is a publicly accountable and publicly constructed system of reaching decisions that overrides emotional drivers.

So the next and best question is how can we monitor and prevent people from joining the legal profession in order to abuse its privileges.

Just as airlines need to ask how they can screen against mad pilots who will crash planes on purpose.

Confidential mental health monitoring of all lawyers is needed.
