If it helps, my opinion with regards Legal Executives and Solicitors is the same as between Solicitors and Barristers we are all legal professionals.

I don't think a fused profession is the way forward we have a system that allows access to practice the law in a number of ways and each profession has its strengths and weaknesses.

The traditional roles allow us to structure our profession practically and as identified brings a wide range of individuals and experiences into the law why throw that away. For me the issue is not the limits for each profession but the ease at which qualified professionals can transfer. As you say a good Legal Executive is worth more then a bad barrister or solicitor.
