as a lawyer, my instinct is to agree with the comments below. we have spent a long time learning the law, which is complicated, and using jargon is often a shortcut which makes life easier. for us. but that seems rather arrogant. none of the court cases we deal with are ever for us - they are all to do with other people's lives - to a greater or lesser extent. it may be something as trivial as recovery of a minor debt, but it could be proceedings that involve loss of liberty; access to children; loss of a home etc. so these things matter to the litigants, and not really a jot to us. we will go home and forget them. so why should we not make sure they understand what is going on? how would it be if we went to hospital for an operation and the doctors spoke purely in technical terms that I did not understand?
