Having read the judgment, he knew what he was doing and his fare-dodging was escalating by his own admission.

I used to commute from Redhill and I know exactly where he is talking about – a little exit on platform 3 – and it’s true, some people do walk out without tapping out because there are no barriers. But it was probably every other week there would be transport police there with a ticket inspector and people who weren’t tapping out were holding up their season ticket.

Being struck off is an extreme punishment, but he knew what he was doing. Fare dodging is such a petty crime, and in my eyes it does damage the image of the profession. He is an adult, he knew the risks, he took them, he got caught, he has been punished and the profession is none the worse without him. He’s not a victim (unlike the young solicitor who was being manipulated by senior colleagues who took advantage of her, then subsequently struck off after whistleblowing – her I do feel sorry for).
