As a solicitor and officer of the court strike off was the only possible sanction but the fact that he self reported is relevant. I consider that aspect a potentially mitigating factor that perhaps justifies some sort of conditionality in the sanctions regime in cases like this. Perhaps a suspended strike off, suspended for the entire career; conditions on PC for a long time (additional reporting & supervision) etc. Ultimately I don’t think the profession values the ethical and social responsibility that comes with admission sufficiently highly. It is too easy to qualify w/o any meaningful ethical emphasis or assessment on suitability. There is then no ethical supervision, peer review or assessment process. Junior solicitors especially but actually all solicitors in varying degree should have their responsibilities, to the court & society, drilled into them including post qualification. If given more emphasis people in the profession will treat this more seriously, and over time the public will come to realise and respect all that being a solicitor should mean. As present brand value is being diluted and that needs to be turned on its head.
