There's no doubt that the system towards qualification needs changing, but it's not the LPC or the Training Contract that need fundamental change, but the way in which they work together. I undertook the LPC a number of years ago and have only now commenced a Training Contract, having worked as a Paralegal. Whilst I am grateful for all those years and the skills that I have gained, it has been incredibly frustrating. I would suggest that perhaps admission to the LPC should only be once a training contract has been secured. No TC, no LPC. That way, we will not have a saturated market full of bright graduates all with the LPC under their belt but no guarantee of qualifying.
