With regards to conveyancing as mentioned below it's so true about these factories and sadly not just the factories, their fees once all the add-ons are made can be daylight robbery.

I saw an estimate this week from Prem... which gave fees of c. £2k plus VAT (total for a sale and purchase each c. £250k with a referral fee buried down below of £1,100! Bordering on criminal.

A huge amount of the add-ons they bury deep in the T&C's are to me just part of the job. It's so sneaky and disingenuous. I'd be embarrassed to do it.

Anyway, my point. Inspired by another solicitor in another part of the country which I saw online I have this week written an article for the local papers educating the public as to the shady world of referral fees and I encourage all self respecting conveyancers (i.e. those who don't pay for work) to do the same and fight back. If the public know, far less will allow themselves to be ripped off in such a manner and sent to a paralegal /conveyancing executive / real estate technician / property lawyer. Estate agents are mugging us off and we're allowing it to happen (and some are shamefully taking part).
