Here's the real travesty. At the time of the protest, the "hostile environment" policy required deportations to take place first, with appeals against deportation to be heard afterwards. This Stasi-esque piece of inhumane barbarism was subsequently found to be unlawful by the Supreme Court. To answer your point though, the deportations that would have taken place that day would have been both lawful, and a grave miscarriage of justice.
