We make choices whether to have children. This may sound old fashioned but once you have a child, the interests of the child come first. The Convention on the Rights of the Child states "In all actions concerning children, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law, administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration. " The ROC also says a child "should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding," Perhaps people need to reconsider whether they really can provide the best for their child before having that child and if not, perhaps have the courage not to do so. It is not fair to the child or society if a parent cannot meet his/her primary duty to his/her child.
