Perhaps one could consider things from the point of view of the child rather than the parent? The Institute of Public Policy Research says global vertebrate populations have fallen by 60 per cent since the 1970s, topsoil is being lost 10 to 40 times faster than it is being replenished by natural processes, and, since the mid-20th century, 30 per cent of the world’s arable land has become unproductive due to erosion. There are already nearly 7.7 billion people on the planet. Earth overshoot day in 2018 fell on 1st August. The global temperature is rising. Long before the question of work/family balance arises, might it be wise to reflect a little on whether this is still a good world to bring a child into?
