Perhaps the only credit the legal profession can take (both solicitors and counsel) having watched the disgraceful decimation of (primarily) the criminal justice system and effective removal of the courts as a forum for the less well off in society, is that many judges will fearlessly criticise that system and the government. I am somewhat surprised at the comment from Marshall Hall (13 Feb 15:44) commenting that the judge "was paid his substantial salary..." Thank heavens for judges like this who make comments which are so profoundly accurate. He appears to be worth every penny of his salary which may appear to some to be "substantial" but which is in fact much less than judges would have earned at the Bar.
