Most of the commentators here appear to be missing the point of the article, which was that at the time GDPR was introduced a lot of poor advice was given concerning the need to renew consents. This led to community organisations, charities and others "losing" half of their supporter database unnecessarily.

Far from being "horse dung" the legislation is essential if we - as data subjects - are going to claw back our rights from FaceBook et al.
GDPR and the new DPA 2018 are not designed to stymie business. They are designed to protect us as data subjects. I honestly don't think there's any degree of familiarity with rocket science required.
