You have identified one of the big issues: the "traditional" family unit. Until recently this was even reinforced by law: until 3 years ago it wasn't possible for a father to take more than 2 weeks off work after the birth of a child. This meant that if the traditional family wanted somebody to stay at home with the child in its first year it had to be the mother. Thankfully now there is shared parental year where parents can choose who takes the leave. Although the take-up of this is currently low, if parental leave is shared more equally one of the big causes of inequality will be removed.

Similarly, childcare responsibilities should be equally shared. It shouldn't be mainly a mother's responsibility to care for children. The burden should be shared equally. For example, the school-gates shouldn't be dominated by mothers dropping off or picking up their children, fathers should play an equal part.

If shouldn't be men who "support their own families" it should be parents who support their families, irrespective of gender. Men don't need to earn more than women to "support their own families". This shouldn't be how families in the 21st century work. It should be down to each family to decide how their family is supported and gender should not be a factor in that decision.
