Hard cases make bad law. I cannot see in the article any justification for the change of decision. I am not saying it is wrong or right, but is there not a danger that this is simply caving in to public pressure? What about those other cases that are not as high profile? What about the reduction in the money available for other legal aid cases if criteria are not applied robustly?

With the obvious caveat that I have every sympathy for this girl's family, there is not an unlimited pot of money. We routinely hear of heart-breakingly difficult decisions made by NICE which are literally life or death, and clear objectivity is required
