Thank you, anon @ 08:16 & 08:20. I'm pleased that I'm not the only one who likes to view modern jurisprudence in an historical context!

I'm glad that you mention the case of Alice Lisle. It's also worthy of note to mention that whilst James II could have commuted her sentence to one of a capital nature, generally it's considered that he didn't do so because her husband had been one of those instrumental in the trial and conviction of his father. Hell hath no fury ..... !
